MIDAS - Moving Image
Database for Access and Re-use of European film collections
The MIDAS project ran from January 2006 through January 2009 and aimed at addressing effectively one of the bottlenecks blocking the full development of an efficient distribution – for commercial and cultural purposes – of European archival materials having historical and cultural value. This bottleneck consists in the complex, time consuming and costly process of locating archival materials across European collections, and identifying the copyright owners.
The project addressed this issue by establishing technical solutions apt to making possible the search and retrieval of archival materials held in a number of collections across Europe by centralising the process of search and retrieval, and by overcoming the language barrier. The web portal filmarchives-online.eu, initiated by MIDAS, provides free and easy access to moving image collections of film archives from all over Europe. Via the multi-lingual web gateway, film works can be searched for by content, filmographic data and physical characteristics. Search results provide information on existence and location of the materials as well as contact details to facilitate access. The project partners contribute extracts from their local archive databases directly to filmarchives online. Each participating institution continously enriches, improves and supplemets its data independently.
The pilot project was designed as a proof of concept. The MIDAS consortium consisted of 18 partner archives.
